This is a classroom project with the brief to create system design for any chosen problem domain. We chose to simplify rabies treatment & management in healthcare. The project was done in a team of 2 where I catered to doctor's part and the patient's part was catered by my counterpart.
The Problem
Rabies disease is highly prevalent in India with Category 3 dog bite cases rising at alarming rates. Lack of treatment protocol awareness and repository pose further issues.
The solution proposed is an application capturing all patient records, sharing correct treatment protocols with doctors, and generating reports for standardized rabies medical aid.
How might we enable an efficient healthcare management system to improve patient outcomes in Rabies cases?
Solution
Problem Understanding
The main motives of creating a system for rabies healthcare management system lies in the fact that the cases are mostly under/unreported at rural areas and the lack of vaccines at healthcare centers.
Most part of the problem can be resolved by spreading awareness about the rabies healthcare intervention. Hence making the solution accessible for doctor and patient.
Scope in Rabies Ecosystem
Using the fishbone diagram we defined the cause and opportunities for improvement of rabies system. We first identified Cause, followed by Sub-causes and deduced Opportunities for the same.
This activity was done in a classroom sprint with project mentor (faculty).
Qualitative Research
We studied some of the existing applications and current perception. I looked up for news articles showcasing the unawareness amongst public about rabies and my partner found existing applications on playstore, which were centered around vaccination dates.
Insights
I interviewed the doctors side and found that rabies didn't have a special ward due to the less frequency of such cases but they also mentioned that in government healthcare centres that they have managed, .
Current Scenario & Business Proposition
We asked the interviewers and researched some of the methods of how a rabies case was currently handled by the people and medical staff. The inconsistencies within each step was marked and an accessible solution for the same was suggested. The solutions were combined to propose final solution in the business model canvas.
At government healthcare centers in India, it is being observed that the rabies treatment regulations agreed upon globally were not followed.
The reason was unawareness of such protocols amongst nurses performing first aid of patients. Therefore a list of those protocols have been provided.
Treatment Protocols
A dog bite case is handled by doctor through vaccination dates at an interval of some days. Thus regulating a patient's case becomes difficult.
The dog bite cases feature lists down all the ongoing cases on top for easy management of patient records.
Dog Bite Cases
After the patient's case is handled the healthcare facility is supposed to compile all the cases under a report and send it on a monthly basis to the rabies officials at govt. level.
The auto-update feature allows the doctors to set the report updating on auto update or can manually update at any time.
Auto Report Update
Inventory Restocking
The rabies vaccine are temperature sensitive and are only required when cases are reported. Since the reporting frequency is less.
Therefore the healthcare only requires some amount of vaccines at the moment. Therefore drone delivery allows the healthcare to restock vaccine stock upon need.
Persona & Journey Map
Based on doctor's insights and research I created the doctor's persona and journey map oh handling a rabies case. It was found that not only during the case but after it's handled, the case needs to be compiled as a digital report and to be updated to the higher govt. officials.
Task Prioritization & Flow
For the doctor's case management application, an open card sort was conducted to group the tasks they would do. And the tasks were further divided into Primary and Secondary tasks.
Testing the Concepts
UI Guide
The concept sketches for the application were made on paper. They were tested with a set of medical students and a doctor. Some features were suggested by the participants and were implemented.
I first created the moodboard with the keywords associated with the type of look and feel the app would have. Then extracted the brand colours from it and maintained brand elements. The styleguide consisted of various UI based elements co-created by team.
Design Handoff
This project was also submitted for AIC 2022 sponsored by Bharat Serums and Vaccines, a leading vaccine manufacturing company in India. The final designs were handed over to the developer team.
Overall the solution would be launched as a rabies management application for doctors.
